You’re an enemy of the ongoing revolution in Syria if you celebrated today (1 year anniversary of the downfall of the taghut Assad) while the only thing that has changed about the country is the person occupying the presidency.

Syria is not an Islamic government nor is its government ruling according to the Shari’ah. That was true for the Assad family’s rule and it’s true for Jolani.

Nationalists/secularists don’t understand that it’s a matter of Islamic principle and proper Aqidah to prefer a violent, oppressive Khalifah/Ameer who legislates the Shari’ah than a compassionate, pluralistic, democrat who legislates according to the whims of the public.

Shaykh Abu Najm Fernando bin al-Iskandar

In de hedendaagse islamitische wereld zijn er enkele prominente geleerden die veel kritiek hebben gekregen vanwege hun nauwe banden met autoritaire regimes en de manier waarop zij hun religieuze autoriteit gebruiken om politieke machthebbers te legitimeren. 1. Ahmad al-Tayyeb (Grootimam van Al-Azhar)

2. Yusuf al-Qaradawi
   Yusuf al-Qaradawi was ooit een van de meest invloedrijke islamitische geleerden, bekend om zijn fatwa’s en invloed op de moslimwereld. Hij was een fel voorstander van de Arabische Lente en uitte kritiek op verschillende autoritaire regimes in de regio. Echter, zijn steun voor de seculiere Turkse staat en zijn positieve houding tegenover sommige regeringen, zoals het Qatar-regime, hebben zijn geloofwaardigheid geschaad. In plaats van consistent zijn islamitische principes te volgen, lijkt al-Qaradawi zijn standpunten vaak aan te passen aan de politieke situatie, wat hem de naam van opportunist heeft opgeleverd.

Al-Qaradawi wordt door veel moslims gezien als iemand die zijn religieuze autoriteit misbruikt voor politieke doeleinden. Zijn steun voor autoritaire regimes, zijn wisselende standpunten en zijn vaak inconsistente benadering van belangrijke kwesties worden gezien als bewijs van zijn bereidheid om de islamitische principes te verraden voor persoonlijke of politieke winst. Dit heeft zijn geloofwaardigheid ondermijnd en hem in de ogen van veel moslims als een charlatan doen overkomen.

3. Saalih al-Fawzaan
   Saalih al-Fawzaan, een invloedrijke islamitische geleerde uit Saoedi-Arabië, wordt door veel moslims beschouwd als een voorbeeld van een hofgeleerde die zich heeft laten omarmen door het Saoedische regime. Zijn uitspraken worden vaak gezien als politieke rechtvaardigingen voor het koninklijke huis, vooral onder het bewind van Mohammed bin Salman (MBS). Al-Fawzaan heeft zijn steun voor het Saoedische regime herhaaldelijk uitgesproken, zelfs nu het land steeds minder religieus lijkt te worden en onder MBS richting secularisatie en economische hervorming beweegt.

Door zijn steun voor een regime dat steeds verder afwijkt van traditionele islamitische waarden, wordt al-Fawzaan door veel moslims als een religieuze figuur gezien die de islam niet als een leidraad voor rechtvaardigheid en moraliteit gebruikt, maar als een instrument voor politieke macht. Zijn bereidheid om de religieuze waarden in te wisselen voor politieke voordelen heeft hem de status van een charlatan opgeleverd in de ogen van veel gelovigen.

4. Muhammad al-Bouti
   Muhammad al-Bouti, een invloedrijke islamitische geleerde uit Syrië, wordt door velen gezien als een charlatan vanwege zijn steun voor het regime van Bashar al-Assad. Al-Bouti noemde het Assad-regime zelfs vergelijkbaar met de metgezellen van de Profeet, de Sahaba, wat door veel moslims werd beschouwd als een grove schending van islamitische principes. Gezien de gruwelijke onderdrukking van het Syrische volk door het regime van Assad, wordt zijn verdediging van de dictator als een ernstige morele misser gezien.

Al-Bouti’s bereidheid om de islamitische waarden van rechtvaardigheid en het beschermen van onschuldige levens te verloochenen voor de politieke belangen van een dictator heeft hem in de ogen van veel moslims als een charlatan gemarkeerd. Zijn steun voor een regime dat bekendstaat om zijn brute repressie maakt het moeilijk voor moslims om hem als een geloofwaardige geleerde te beschouwen.

5. Ibn Bayyah
   Ibn Bayyah, een invloedrijke islamitische geleerde uit de VAE, wordt door veel moslims gezien als een charlatan vanwege zijn nauwe banden met het regime van de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten. Zijn werk als adviseur voor de VAE-regering en zijn steun voor autoritaire regimes hebben zijn geloofwaardigheid als onafhankelijke geleerde ondermijnd. Ibn Bayyah is vaak gezien als iemand die zijn religieuze autoriteit gebruikt om de macht van onderdrukkende regeringen te legitimeren, wat hem in de ogen van veel moslims als een opportunist maakt.

Door zijn politieke compromissen en steun voor repressieve regimes wordt Ibn Bayyah door veel gelovigen beschouwd als iemand die zijn religieuze principes heeft opgegeven ten gunste van politieke macht en materiële voordelen. Zijn bereidheid om zichzelf en de islamitische ethiek te verloochenen voor politieke doeleinden heeft hem de status van charlatan opgeleverd in de ogen van de islamitische gemeenschap.

Conclusie
De vijf geleerden die we hier hebben besproken, worden door veel moslims beschouwd als charlatans omdat ze hun religieuze autoriteit misbruiken voor politieke doeleinden en steun geven aan regimes die de islamitische principes van rechtvaardigheid, vrijheid en bescherming van onschuldige levens ondermijnen. In plaats van op te komen voor de waarden van de islam en de rechten van de mensen, lijken zij de belangen van politieke machthebbers boven die van de islamitische gemeenschap te stellen. Dit heeft hun geloofwaardigheid ernstig ondermijnd en hen in de ogen van veel moslims als onbetrouwbare figuren gepresenteerd.

Filantroop en spiritueel leider Karim Aga Khan is op 88-jarige leeftijd overleden. Dat heeft zijn liefdadigheidsinstelling het Aga Khan Development Network bekendgemaakt.

Aga Khan is de titel van de godsdienstig leider en imam van de Ismaili-moslims. Met 15 miljoen aanhangers wereldwijd vormen de Ismailisten een van de grootste takken binnen de sjiitische islam.

De Aga Khan werd geboren in Zwitserland als prins Karim el Hoesseini. Op 20-jarige leeftijd, na het overlijden van zijn grootvader, werd hij de 49ste leider van de Ismailisten. Hun leiders worden gezien als directe afstammelingen van de profeet Mohammed.

Karim Aga Khan stond bekend om zijn extravagante levensstijl. Hij woonde in een kasteel in Frankrijk, had een privé-eiland op de Bahama’s, een superjacht en een privé-vliegtuig. Hij verdiende geld met onder meer het fokken van renpaarden, waar hij er zeker 900 van bezat. Shergar, het beroemdste en meest waardevolle renpaard ter wereld in het begin van de jaren 80, kwam uit zijn stal.

Zijn vermogen bedroeg volgens schattingen van Forbes tussen 800 miljoen en 1 miljard dollar. Andere bronnen spreken van 13 miljard.

Hassen Chalghoumi, the so-called imam of Drancy near Paris, said that French Muslims should say “France Akbar” instead of “Allahu Akbar”.

This announcement marked the culmination of years of mainstream Muslim organisations and individuals promoting those among its ranks who align themselves with white supremacy, the erosion of civil liberties, and global tyranny.

Despite the outrageousness of Yusuf’s decision, many in the community still defended him. Imam Zaid Shakir, who in the past has also voiced his support for “blue lives matter” also appeared to shield him from accountability. In 2006, he and Hamza Yusuf were profiled in the New York Times as reformed troublemakers, former critics of American policies, who have now been rehabilitated into the mainstream as “good” Muslims.

In 2008, the two founded Zaytuna College, a Muslim liberal arts institution aimed at educating “students to become morally, intellectually and spiritually accomplished persons”. The college publishes a journal which is funded by the Templeton Foundation whose benefactors are known sympathisers of the ultra-conservative Tea Party. The same foundation also supports the Quilliam Foundation of UK-based self-professed “counter-extremist” Maajid Nawaz.

There have been others like Yusuf in the Muslim American community who have engaged in dubious interactions with state power. Another prominent scholar, Sherman Jackson, is a board member of the UAE-based Muslim Council of Elders. In 2015, together with other members, he attended a meeting with Egyptian dictator Abdel Fattah el-Sisi at the height of his brutal crackdown on political dissent, which saw tens of thousands thrown in jail, tortured and forcefully disappeared. In 2018, the council also congratulated the Egyptian president for winning uncontested a second term in a sham election.

Jackson is also an adviser to the Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) initiative of the right-wing think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies, alongside former British PM Tony Blair, who stands accused of war crimes in Iraq.

Many Muslim Americans also continue to embrace and support the US army, even when it is deployed in Muslim countries to carry out our government’s imperial ploys. To appeal to the “white gaze”, we have lionised someone like Khizr Khan – a man whose only claim to fame is being the father of a Muslim soldier who was killed during his deployment to support the US occupation of Iraq.

When political cowardice is the defining feature of our leaders and institutions, when a theology of obedience is the approach of our scholars, and when corporations like Starbucks take more principled stances on our issues than we do, we can be sure that we have lost the common principles that bind a community together.

And even in his current role as attorney general in Minnesota, Ellison is still busy promoting homosexuality by dancing in LGBT pride parades with scantily clad women.

With Khizr Khan, you have a man whose only claim to fame is that his son, Humayun Khan, died in the Iraq War in the line of duty. What was this duty? Slaughtering Iraqi Muslims. As I pointed out when Khizr Khan first entered the national discourse, Humayun Khan was part of a battalion stationed in Baqubah in 2004 that was involved with indiscriminately shooting civilian targets, harassing innocent Iraqi prisoners, and destroying Iraqi infrastructure. This is the person American Muslims are supposed to honor through his father, Khizr Khan, who is paraded around in these venues.

The fact that these Muslim orgs continue to trot him out is an embarrassment and a real blemish on the American Muslim community.

The Egyptian Supreme Media Council received an official request from the Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) Sunday to ban the appearance of a self-proclaimed imam named Mostafa Rashid in the Egyptian media under the title of Australia’s Mufti.

“Rashid is not a mufti of Australia; neither is he a member in our council nor an imam at any mosque or Islamic center in Australia. He does not practice any Islamic or social activity and no one from the Muslim community knows him or heard of him except from Egyptian satellite channels,” said ANIC’s letter, which was written in Arabic.

Egypt’s Al-Azhar also denied in 2016 that Rashid, who is usually seen in Al-Azhar traditional attire on T.V., belonged to the prestigious institution, emphasizing that he was not the Mufti of Australia either.
